Ladder Ranch (a family-run working cattle and sheep ranch) is remote but worth the drive past Steamboat Springs, CO (1.5 hours northwest). The ranch is over 4000 acres and borders thousands of acres of national forest - all perfect for riding. The vistas are spectacular. Roads and trails are appropriate for beginner riders and steep climbs are perfect for advanced/adventurous riders. Horse accommodations are very nice - well kept and sturdy pens, easy water access. Electric and water hook-up for trailers. Not fancy, but practical and fun! Meghan, the host/owner/rancher in charge, is very helpful and very welcoming.

Palo Duro Canyon, near Canyon, Tx

Park is beautiful with stunning panoramas. Trails are beautiful, intermediate difficulty with some rises and drops. Trail bridges are not horse-friendly, but can be worked around. Entrance to horse trails are not well marked, but trails themselves are. Beware of riding in the peak of summer - the temperature in the canyon in July was 120 degrees! Would be absolutely beautiful in spring or fall (but probably busier). Campsites are primitive - no designated spots, no trailer hookups. You can run your generator, though. Fire rings, picnic tables, pergolas available. Four shared pens that each house 2-3 horses - no shade. No gate latches. Water spigot. Bring your own hose. Go see "Texas!" the musical (at the amphitheater in the park). It runs all summer, and is amazing!

Trails are just beautiful - you can ride for miles and miles. Shoes or boots recommended, as trails are rocky in places. Campsite is clean and well maintained. Most sites had three pens each. Managers are very friendly and very helpful. Come out to ride for the day or stay and camp. Reasonable rates.
